Our 100% Oak firewood is cut to 16” lengths, split, and allowed to dry, or “season” in a process that keeps the wood free of mud and debris while it dries to the optimum moisture content, usually about 12% moisture. The wood is checked periodically with a digital moisture meter to monitor the seasoning process. Customers often ask, "How many months or years has the wood been seasoned?" This is a misleading answer as firewood can totally dry overnight in a kiln, yet lie in a wet field for two years and never dry to the correct moisture content. If the wood is excessively dry, it burns too quickly and minimizes the heating potential of the wood. Conversely, if the wood has too much moisture, it is hard to light and uses the wood's potential energy to heat the water to the evaporation point before the burning can even take place.
Next, the firewood is loaded into specially designed baskets to ensure an honest measurement. A tightly stacked cord takes up 128 cubic feet, but if you loosely throw the same wood into a basket, you need approximately 160 cubic feet. That’s how some firewood dealers sell a “truckload” of wood that doesn’t exactly stack up to what you thought you bought when you get it home. We frequently hear comments like, “Wow! Is that wood all for me?” and “That’s a much bigger cord than I got from the guy I bought from last year.”
